What an ATS is
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software employers use to collect applications, move candidates through hiring stages, and search their database. Recruiters often search it for skills or job titles, and some set up screening questions. Systems differ by vendor and by how each employer configures them, so no outside tool can see exactly how a given employer ranks you.
How resume scoring tools work
Most "ATS score" tools, including ours, compare the words in your resume with the words in a job ad. They look for skills, tools and phrases, and some weigh where those words appear. A high score means your resume uses the job's language. It does not mean a person or system will pick you.
How the HireBait score is calculated
| Part | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword coverage | 70% | Share of up to 25 job keywords found in your resume. Keywords on "required" or "must" lines count more. Ones only on "a plus" or "preferred" lines count less. |
| Prominence | 30% | Share of your matched keywords that appear in the top third of your resume, where people skim first. |
| Resume checks | 0% (shown separately) | Contact details, Summary, Experience and Skills headings, dates, length, and whether the job title appears. |
It runs entirely in your browser and uses no AI. Your text is not uploaded.
How to use the checker
- Copy your resume as plain text (from Word or Google Docs, select all and paste).
- Copy the full job listing, including the requirements.
- Open the free score checker, paste both, and tap Get my fit score.
- Read the reasons and checks. Fix structure first: contact details at the top, standard headings, dates on every role.
- Look at missing keywords. Use Copy missing keywords, then add only the true ones, inside bullets with proof.
- Check again. Stop when the resume reads well to a person. A higher number is not worth an untrue line.
Limits, honestly
- It is a word match, not a prediction, and not a copy of any employer's ATS.
- It doesn't understand synonyms well. "Dashboards" won't match "BI".
- It checks that dates exist, not how many years you have.
- It reads plain text. Tables, columns and images in your file may be read differently by real systems.
- It can't judge writing quality, results, or culture fit.
Formatting that tends to parse well
- Standard headings: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education.
- A single column, simple bullets, and real text (not text inside images).
- Contact details in the body, not only in a header or footer.
- A common file type the employer asks for, usually PDF or DOCX.

FAQ
Is there a real "ATS score"?
Not a universal one. Each employer's system and setup differs. Score tools, including ours, estimate how well your resume matches the job ad's words.
Is the HireBait checker free?
Yes. It has no limit, needs no signup, uses no AI, and runs in your browser.
What score should I aim for?
There is no magic number. Aim to cover the required skills you really have, with proof, in a resume a person can skim. Don't add untrue keywords to raise the score.
Does it store my resume?
No. The checker runs in your browser and your text is not uploaded.
